Abstract

The article focuses a written testimony on the existence of a chryselephantine statue of Zeus at Berytus in Phoenicia. This study suggests that this text is reliable and that thus such a statue existed. This image of Zeus should be understood in the context of the well-known habit of Phoenician cities and sanctuaries to commission Greek sculptors for their most important works. The configuration of this statue may be recognized on the enthroned Zeus carved in relief on the altar (so-called ‘tribune’) of Eshmun from the sanctuary of this god three km north of Sidon, 41 km south of Berytus, dated around the middle of the 4th c. BC. A similar information on another Pheidian Zeus on Cyprus is also duly considered.
