Abstract

This research was carried out with the financial support of the Russian Scientific Fund, project No. 25-18-00656, at the Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture and Urban Planning — branch of the Central Research and Project Institute of the Construction Ministry of Russia.

The paper deals with the history of research on medieval frescoes in Dalmatia and examines how scholarly perceptions of these monuments have evolved from the late 19th century to the early 21st century. The main focus is on identifying the key stages, directions, and methods of study, as well as summarizing the principal arguments of academic discussion. Special attention is paid to changes in terminology, to the interpretation of the relationship between Byzantine and Western elements, and to the impact of political and cultural contexts on the understanding of Dalmatia’s artistic heritage. The article synthesizes more than a century of scholarship on Dalmatian monumental painting and outlines prospects for further research.
