Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of the evangeliary decoration in France in the 16th century. The author focuses on the significance of this type of religious book for the medieval society and shares her observations on the evangeliary decoration in France based on the manuscripts from the National Library of Russia and certain Western collections. Of particular interest are the manuscripts created in Paris during the reign of Francis I, especially the Evangeliary of Francis I, illuminated by two artists — Étienne Colaud and the master of François de Rohan, as well as their collaborators, in the period from 1525 to 1546. This manuscript has hardly been studied by researchers. The author dwells on the attribution of the illustrative cycle of the manuscript and the features of its iconography. A full description of the manuscript has been given for the first time, including an indication of the texts and subjects of the full cycle of illustrations. The article concludes that the manuscript differs from its contemporaries in its great design complexity and uniqueness. The author offers her interpretations of some controversial subjects. The article is accompanied by the reproduction of miniatures.
