The late 14th – early 16th c. churches without pillars in Pskov. On the problem of Balkan parallels
Keywords:
Pskov architecture in the 14th – 15th centuries, churches without pillars, benched vaults, Morava school architectureAbstract
The article presents an attempt to define the origin of the churches without piers in late 14th – early 16th century Pskov architecture, based on the architectural analysis providing more accurate dates for the monuments and juxtaposition with the supposed Balkan parallels. The result of the survey denies any interrelation between the Old Russian and Serbian buildings or the influence of the latter upon the former. Moreover, the kinship of construction and decoration of Pskov pillarless and crossed-dome churches makes us assume the origin and development of the particular type in Pskov to be of the autochthonous nature.
