В статье, написанной в жанре научного эссе, обсуждается характер взаимодействия западноевропейского и русского изобразительного искусства XX в. с художественным наследием античности. Обращаясь к произведениям Серова, Бакста, Дейнеки, Бекмана, Брекера и других художников, чьи имена менее знамениты, но чье творчество оставило след в искусстве своего времени, автор обозначает этапы, в рамках которых архитекторы, живописцы и скульпторы по-разному выстраивали свои отношения с античностью, в огромной степени — в зависимости от историко-культурных обстоятельств, в которых оказывались.
