Klazomenian terracotta sarcophagiAbstract
Painted terracotta sarcophagi, known as the “Klazomenian”, were discovered in the necropolises of the Ionian cities on the western coast of Asia Minor. Their scholarly investigation began as early as the late 19th century, however, the semantic content of their pictorial decoration remains the subject of scientific debate to this day. This article offers a case study focusing on the painted decoration of one of the Klazomenian sarcophagi belonging to the so-called Albertinum group (510–470 BC) from the collection of the Antikensammlung of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. By exploring the visual language of the paintings, the authors seek to identify the principles of semantic connection of images, united, as the analysis shows, into a holistic decorative and semantic structure.
