The Church of Nikola Nadein is the first monument to have established a tradition of wall painting in 17th-century Yaroslavl. Yet, its paintings dating to 1640 remain understudied. This is largely due to the fact that most of it is still under the layer of 1882 renovations. However, thanks to the efforts of specialists, who restored wall paintings of the Annunciation aisle, the northern and partially western gallery from 2006 to 2014, researchers have the opportunity to focus on the authentic paintings.
The article provides the history of the wall paintings restoration in the Annunciation aisle. It also presents the results of chemical analyses of the artistic materials used by the masters in their work on the compositions of the narthex, the northern gallery, and the Annunciation aisle itself, as well as the basement and the staircase entrance to the Annunciation aisle. One of the important results was the discovery of blue verditer in the composition of the painting layer, while its initial use in icon painting is believed to have occurred in the second half of the 17th century. Thus, the study of the wall paintings revealed one of the earliest documented cases of the use of this pigment. In addition, a mixture of smalt, blue verditer, and a small amount of artificial ultramarine blue was identified in the 1882 restoration layer, which is completely uncharacteristic of the second half of the 19th century. As a result, our findings allow us to correct the existing assumptions concerning the time of use of these art materials.
