Abstract

The article is devoted to the unity of largely opposite styles and approaches to organization of collective work with students of Raphael and Michelangelo in Perino del Vaga’s workshop. It is an attempt to answer the question of how the master managed to combine the experience of Michelangelo and Raphael as a guide in the work of his assistants. As a rule, Perino is considered separately as a former student and heir of Santi and as an artist close in style to Michelangelo. At the same time, if we take into account both factors, it becomes clear why Perino was interested in perceiving his style in a complex manner, as well as why Michelangelo, who used to work alone, favorably treated Perino’s ramified studio. Vasari, an adherent of Michelangelo’s methods, sharply condemned the work of Perino’s workshop and said that anyone who wants to succeed must do everything by himself. However, Michelangelo, initially jealous of the success of Raphael and his students, treated Perino with respect and subsequently tried to bring his students closer to him as associates. The article explains the change in Michelangelo’s attitude by Perino’s consistent desire to imitate his manner, instilled in him by Raphael, and shows that the versatile training of assistants instituted by Raphael helped Perino to educate a whole galaxy of talented artists who would later become Michelangelo’s followers.
