Reverted “Reflection”. On Painted Portraits of the Second Half of the 18th Century Created After Engraved Originals

Abstract

The article is devoted to the painted portraits created aft er the engraved originals in Russia in the second half of the 18th c. The issue of the correlation between the original painting and its engraved and painted reproductions is considered on the basis of the examination of the portraits from diff erent museums and private collections. The author observes how the portrait images were being transformed, while being “translated” from one form into another, changing the size, composition and color.
