About the Travel of Lev Vladimirovich Dahl across Russia in 1874 and 1876 “with Scientific and Artistic Purposes of Collecting the Materials for Architecture

Abstract

This article is devoted to the archival document from the fund of Academy of Arts in the Russian State Historical Archive, which is connected with the expeditions of Lev Vladimirovich Dahl (1834–1878) across the Russian provinces in 1874 and 1876. These travels were organized for collecting graphic materials and historical information about the architecture of the ancient Russia. They also played a very important role in the development of studies in history of architecture in the second half of the 19th c.
By studying in detail the archival materials the author of the article presents some new information about organizational problems of the expeditions and the idea of such events and their participants. Besides that there is a detailed list of the researched and pictured architectural monuments by Dahl and his assistants, students of the Academy.
In the appendix of the article some interesting recommendations of A.A. Gornostaev to the Academy are provided along with the text of Dahl’s report on the expedition in 1876, published for the first time.
