От преступников к мученикам: изображения казни в искусстве Римской империи

Аннотация

В статье анализируются изображения сцен римских игр с участием диких животных на керамике и мозаиках I–V вв. н. э., преимущественно из Северной Африки. Эти сцены изображают как травлю зверей (venatio), так и публичные казни преступников, бывшие составной частью этих игр. При анализе популярности этих сюжетов автор приходит к выводу о том, что тщательно отделанные мозаики из Злитена или Эль-Джема были направлены на прославление хозяина дома, выступившего организатором или спонсором городских игр. Возможно, что сцены на керамике изначально также выполняли коммеморативную функцию, но со временем превратились в самостоятельный изобразительный тип. В основе популярности и этих мозаик, и керамики, и самих кровавых игр лежала римская любовьк жестокости. Сосуды с подобными изображениями, датирующиеся IV–V вв., не должны связываться с культом мучеников, они по-прежнему изображают казни преступников, однако некоторые малообразованные верующие могли полагать, что на них изображены страсти святых.
