Сложение образа монастыря в русском искусстве XIV–XVI веков

Во второй половине XIV в. в русском искусстве наблюдается интерес к монашеской тематике. В это время в ранних иконах «Покров» возникло изображение Влахернского монастыря.
В XV столетии появились изображения русских монастырей — Троице-Сергиева на фресках Сергиевской церкви Новгородского детинца (1459–1463) и кремлевского чудова в клеймах иконы митрополита Алексия 1480-х гг.
В XVI в. виды русских монастырей — храмов, окруженных стенами, иногда со сценами чудес, постепенно становятся самостоятельными сюжетами икон. В первую очередь это виды Соловецкого монастыря на иконах «обитель Зосимы и Савватия», в которых архитектура стала основным содержанием сюжета. очень интересен не получивший развития сюжет «обитель преподобного Савватия Тверского». Благодаря включению в пейзаж сцен из Священного Писания он напоминает паломнические путеводители по Святой земле.
Следует подчеркнуть, что интерес к архитектуре монастырей является отличительной чертой именно русского искусства. Это связано с общежительным устройством русских монастырей, что в северном климате требовало сложных архитектурных комплексов, и с активным каменным строительством в XVI в. Существенную роль в формировании таких сюжетов сыграли чертежи, сопрово- ждавшие строительство, а также изображения Святой земли.
